Relief for Cooperative Societies: AGM Extension for FY 2024–25 in Maharashtra

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is one of the most important events for any cooperative housing society or organization. It ensures transparency, accountability, and participation of members in key decision-making processes. As per Section 75 of the Maharashtra Cooperative Societies Act, 1960, every cooperative society is required to convene its AGM within six months after the end of the financial year. For the year 2024–25, the statutory deadline for AGMs was set for September 30, 2025.

However, due to the unprecedented heavy rainfall across Maharashtra in September 2025, normal life has been severely affected. Many regions, including villages and urban areas, faced flood-like situations, with roads and essential services disrupted. In such a challenging environment, cooperative societies have found it extremely difficult to convene their AGMs within the stipulated period.

Recognizing this situation, the Registrar of Cooperative Societies has exercised the special powers provided under the first proviso to Section 75(1) of the Maharashtra Cooperative Societies Act, 1960. This proviso allows for an extension of AGM timelines in exceptional circumstances such as floods, heavy rains, droughts, earthquakes, or contagious diseases.

Accordingly, the Cooperative Commissioner and Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Maharashtra State, has issued an official order dated 29/09/2025, extending the due date for holding AGMs for the financial year 2024–25. Instead of the original deadline of September 30, 2025, societies are now permitted to hold their AGMs up to October 31, 2025.

This extension offers much-needed relief to cooperative societies, especially in flood-affected areas, as it provides them with additional time to restore normal functioning and prepare adequately for their AGMs. It also ensures that societies can conduct their meetings with proper documentation, participation, and compliance, without rushing under difficult circumstances.

The decision reflects the government’s sensitivity towards ground realities and its commitment to supporting cooperative societies in times of natural calamities. It also upholds the spirit of the cooperative movement, which emphasizes collective welfare and fairness.

Cooperative societies are advised to take note of this extension and plan their AGMs accordingly. They must also ensure timely communication with members, auditors, and authorities to avoid last-minute challenges. Proper documentation and adherence to the extended timeline will help societies remain compliant with the law while safeguarding members’ rights.

In conclusion, this extension is not just an administrative decision but a practical necessity, ensuring that societies across Maharashtra can fulfill their legal obligations despite the disruption caused by natural calamities.
